Now Yamaha are about to amaze the off-road world once again with what is surely the most important new powerplant to be produced since our liquid cooled YZ 2-strokes of the early 1980s. Extremely compact and remarkably light, the YZ400F’s 4-stroke powerplant incorporates some of the most sophisticated technology ever seen on a production motocross engine. Displacing 399cc, this 55hp high performance liquid cooled motor features bore and stroke dimensions of 92 x 60.1mm – a free-revving short stroke configuration which allows this ground-breaking motorcycle to produce a wider powerband than today’s 250cc 2-strokes. Short skirt piston runs in a ceramic composite plated cylinder which reduces frictional losses, thereby enhancing throttle response throughout the rpm range. To ensure overall dimensions are kept to a minimum this revolutionary new engine is fitted with an extremely light and compact 5-valve cylinder head. Running a 12.5:1 compression ratio and with a combustion chamber volume of 20.8 cc, this high efficiency 5-valve design runs with lightweight valves, springs and lifters for immediate throttle response and smooth high rpm operation. Feeding the three lightweight inlet valves is a 39mm Keihin flat-slide carburettor which breathes through a large capacity airbox. Special feature on the YZ400F’s intake side is an innovative air valve which is designed to ensure easy starting when the engine is warm. A tube connects the machine’s inlet manifold directly to the airbox, bypassing the FCR39 carburettor. By pulling the air valve’s choke-type knob, air is fed straight from the airbox into the engine for easier warm starting.

Shift timing indicator light This indicator light can be set to come on and go off at the desired engine speeds and is used to inform the rider when it is time to shift to the next higher gear. The electrical circuit of the indicator light can be checked by turning the key to “ON”. If the indicator light does not come on for a few seconds, then go off, have a Yamaha dealer check the electrical circuit. (See pages 3-7-3-10 for a detailed explanation of the function of this indicator light and on how to set it.) EAU04923* Coolant temperature warning light “” This warning light comes on when the engine overheats. When this occurs, stop the engine immediately and allow the engine to cool. The electrical circuit of the warning light can be checked by turning the key to “ON”. If the warning light does not come on for a few seconds, then go off, have a Yamaha dealer check the electrical cir- cuit. Multi-function display The multi-function display is equipped with the following: a speedometer (which shows the riding speed) an odometer (which shows the total distance traveled) two tripmeters (which show the distance traveled since they were last set to zero) a fuel reserve tripmeter (which shows the distance traveled since the fuel level warning light came on) a clock a self-diagnosis device a display brightness and shift timing indicator light control mode NOTE: Be sure to turn the key to “ON” before using the “SELECT” and “RESET” buttons. To switch the speedometer and odometer/tripmeter displays between kilometers and miles, press the “SELECT” button and “RESET” button together for at least two seconds. Odometer and tripmeter modes Pushing the “SELECT” button switches the display between the odometer mode “ODO” and the tripmeter modes “TRIP 1″ and “TRIP 2″ in the following order: ODO → TRIP 1 → TRIP 2 → ODO If the fuel level warning light comes on (see page 3-2), the odometer display will automatically change to the fuel reserve tripmeter mode “F-TRIP” and start counting the distance traveled from that point. In that case, pushing the “SELECT” button switches the display between the various tripmeter and odometer modes in the following order: F-TRIP → TRIP 1 → TRIP 2 → ODO → F-TRIP

Rear brake lever The rear brake lever is located on the left handlebar grip. To apply the rear brake, pull this lever toward the handlebar grip. EAU13182 Fuel tank cap To remove the fuel tank cap, turn it counterclockwise, and then pull it off. To install the fuel tank cap, insert it into the tank opening, and then turn it clock- wise. WARNING EWA11091 Make sure that the fuel tank cap is properly closed after filling fuel. Leaking fuel is a fire hazard. EAU13221 Fuel Make sure there is sufficient gasoline in the tank. WARNING EWA10881 Gasoline and gasoline vapors are extremely flammable. To avoid fires and explosions and to reduce the risk of injury when refueling, follow these instructions. 1. Before refueling, turn off the engine and be sure that no one is sitting on the vehicle. Never refuel while smoking, or while in the vicinity of sparks, open flames, or other sources of ignition such as the pilot lights of water heaters and clothes dryers. 2. Do not overfill the fuel tank. When refueling, be sure to insert the pump nozzle into the fuel tank filler hole. Stop filling when the fuel reaches the bottom of the filler tube. Because fuel expands when it heats up, heat from the engine or the sun can cause fuel to spill out of the fuel tank. Your Yamaha engine has been designed to use regular unleaded gasoline with a pump octane number [(R+M)/2] of 86 or higher, or a research octane number of 91 or higher. If knocking (or pinging) occurs, use a gasoline of a different brand or premium unleaded fuel. Use of unleaded fuel will extend spark plug life and reduce maintenance costs. Gasohol There are two types of gasohol: gasohol containing ethanol and that containing methanol. Gasohol containing ethanol can be used if the ethanol content does not exceed 10% (E10). Gasohol containing methanol is not recommended by Yamaha because it can cause damage to the fuel system or vehicle performance problems

The 2006 model runs with the same 998 cc liquid-cooled 4-stroke DOHC 4-cylinder 5-valve layout featuring a 77 x 53.6 mm bore and stroke and 12.4:1 compression ratio. Equipped with a 3-axis transmission, fuel injection and 40 degree forward slanted cylinders, this ultra-compact powerplant is one of the most highly respected supersport engines of all time. Yamaha’s engineers have conducted a thorough examination of the R1′s intake and exhaust efficiency, and for 2006 a range of detailed changes in this area have achieved a 3 Hp increase in power at 12,500 rpm without direct air induction. One of the most significant changes is the use of shorter intake valve guides for 2006. Measuring 27.5 mm, these new guides are 5 mm shorter than the 2005 model, and this 15% reduction in length increases engine efficiency by increasing intake air flow, and reducing frictional power losses. To match the new intake valve guides, the 2006 model also features smoother intake ports. 1. With the bike unloaded on the side stand and the shock fully extended, have an assistant measure from a point at the axle (center point) to a point on the frame, fender or bodywork directly above it. Record this measurement. 2. With the bike off the stand and the rider in the seat, bounce on the suspension and let the bike settle. Have the assistant measure from the same two points. Subtract the second measurement from the first. 3. The amount of settle, or “sag” is a function of the wheel travel. It should only be between 1/4 and 1/3 of the total travel. 4. If the difference is less than the minimum, reduce the spring preload. Measure the distance again starting with Step 2. Adjust again if necessary. 5. If the difference is more than the maximum, increase the spring preload. Measure the distance again starting with Step 2. Adjust again if necessary. Note: If the ride height is too low, the shock will bottom unnecessarily, resulting in a harsh ride. If the ride height is too high, the shock will “top out” too easily when rebounding from a bump or under hard deceleration. NITROGEN PRESSURES IN EMULSION SHOCKS CAUTION: The pressure in these shocks cannot successfully be checked. Concerns with the gauge volume and the gas volume in the shock body create a situation where you cannot accurately determine what pressure was in the shock. In addition when the pressure is lowered (i.e. checking the pressure) the gas and some of the shock oil escapes into the gauge. It is possible to lose a large percentage of the shock oil by depressing the core of a charged shock to the atmosphere. Please note that in order to check the pressure, some of the gas must escape and fill the gauge assembly. The volume of the gas pocket is about half the size of your thumb, so a very small volume change results in a large pressure drop. Because the gauges’ volumes vary, it is not possible to deduce the actual pressure in the shock prior to attaching the gauge. Therefore it is imperative that any attempt to check pressure be accompanied by the capability of refilling the shock. In other words: If you don’t have a nitrogen source handy, don’t check the pressure
