1995 Models To prevent accidental vehicle start-up, which could cause death or serious injury, disconnect battery cables (negative cable first) before proceeding. Disconnect negative (-) battery cable first. (00049a) 1.1995 MODELS, REMOVAL OF ELECTRONIC SPEEDOMETER AND BRACKET 1a. Refer to applicable Service Manual procedure and remove seat. 1b. Refer to applicable Service Manual procedure and remove fuel tank. Stop the engine when refueling or servicing the fuel system. Do not smoke or allow open flame or sparks near gasoline. Gasoline is extremely flammable and highly explosive, which could result in death or serious injury. (00002a) 1c. Remove speedometer sensor cable from mounting clips under tank. See Figure 1. The 3-place speedometer sensor connector [65] is located on the frame beneath the seat. Remove connector from t-stud and disconnect. Cut cable tie holding sensor wires to right rear frame tube. 1d. Refer to applicable Service Manual procedure and remove headlamp, for work clearance. 1e Remove handlebar clamp screws securing speedometer bracket. Remove speedometer, bracket, and harness. 2.1995 MODELS, DISCONNECT MAIN WIRING HARNESS 8-PLACE CONNECTOR [21B, A] (FIGURE 2) 2a. Disconnect the battery, negative cable first. Refer to applicable Service Manual procedure and disconnect main wiring harness 8-place connector [21A, B], at the front of the motorcycle. 3.1995 MODELS, REMOVE SPEEDOMETER LEADS FROM 8-PLACE CONNECTOR [21B, A] (FIGURE 2) 3a. See Figure 2 and Service Manual wiring schematic. Pull the following wires and terminals out of connector [21B]. Wire Color Cavity Number Orange/white 5 White/green 1 Black 2 3b. Remove the large female connector from the fuel gauge black wire. 3c. Do not remove front gasket from the speedometer. 6.1995 MODELS, INSTALL SPEEDOMETER IN KIT BRACKET 6a. See Figure 5. Place wires from speedometer through front of left opening in double bracket. Lubricate the front and rear gaskets with isopropyl alcohol or glass cleaner to ease installation. 6b. Insert speedometer into the front of the double bracket. Be sure wire guides are aligned with opening at bottom of bracket. 6c. Place rear gasket in position and align gasket tabs. Work gasket into space between speedometer and bracket by pushing speedometer against one side of bracket while pushing gasket into position at the opposite side. 6d. Add amber bulb assembly from kit to speedometer in order for tachometer and speedometer backlighting to match. 6e. Replace cover and boot from reset switch.

SPEEDOMETER INSTALLATION The following procedure details the removal of the factory speedometer and installation of the digital speedometer on Softail models; however the process is similar for all other models: 1. Remove the nut and washer (item #4 in the accompanying exploded view) that secures the console (#5) to the fuel tank. 2. Lay a clean shop rag on the fuel tank and flip the console over to expose the underside of the console. 3. Separate the 12-pin harness connector (#2) from the speedometer. 4. Unscrew the rubber cover from the “trip” reset switch (#6) on t left side of the console. he 5. Remove the “trip” switch from the console. 6. Pry between the three tabs that hold the back clamp (#7) to the speedometer (#1). Remove the back clamp from the speedometer. 7. Remove the speedometer from the console. 8. Remove the gasket (#3) from the speedometer. 9. Installation is the reverse of removal. CHAPTER 3 SPEEDOMETER OPERATION When the motorcycle key switch is ON, the speedometer will enter “normal” mode. Pressing the MODE button will cycle through the following display options: Odometer (ODOM) displays the mileage since the speedometer was installed. Trip (TRIP) displays the mileage since the last time the “trip” button was pressed. Head Temp (H TEMP) displays the cylinder head temperature in degrees F. Battery V (BATT V) displays the battery voltage Fuel (FUEL) displays the fuel level in gallons. Miles Per Gallon (MPG) displays the fuel economy in miles per gallon. Speedometer Cowling Chrome 1 2 Alcohol Wipe 1 NOTE: Allow time for the 3M® brand quality tape to cure for 24 hours at 19-32° C before washing or waxing the motorcycle. INSTALLATION 1. Position the Speedometer Cowl in front of the Speedometer. The Cowl attaches to the Speedometer Cover, not on the rubber ring around the Speedometer. The Cowl should be symmetrically located in relation to the Speedometer, use the Speedometer markings as a reference. 2. Remove the red backing tape from the adhesive strip on the base of the Speedometer Cowl. 3. Position the Speedometer Cowl as done in step 1. Make any position adjustments now. 4. Firmly press the Speedometer Cowl in place on the Speedometer Cover. 5. Allow twenty-four hours for the adhesive to fully set before washing or waxing.

Removing the Old Speedometer NOTE This Instruction Sheet covers several different Harley- Davidson models and years. Make sure you locate and follow the procedures that apply to the motorcycle receiving the new gauge. 1. Apply power to motorcycle and record the odometer reading. 2. Remove the seat according to the procedure in the applicable Service Manual. To prevent accidental vehicle start-up, which could cause death or serious injury, disconnect battery cables (negative cable first) before proceeding. (00048a) Disconnect negative (-) battery cable first. If positive (+) cable should contact ground with negative (-) cable connected, the resulting sparks can cause a battery explosion, which could result in death or serious injury. (00049a) 2. Disconnect battery cables, negative cable first. NOTE Cover the fuel tank with clean shop towels to prevent scratching. Damage to the finish could result. 3. Remove the instrument console acorn nut (and mounting screw with a flat washer on some models). Lay clean shop towels on the fuel tank. Lift the console from the fuel tank, turn it upside down and lay it on the towels. NOTE If necessary, bend back the flexible metal clip to free the harness conduit from the underside of the console. 4. Unplug the 12-terminal connector (39B) from the back of the speedometer. Depress the external latches and use a rocking motion to separate the pin and socket halves. 5. Remove the back clamp: All models except FXSTD: Gently pry the three latches upward to release the back clamp from the back of the speedometer. FXSTD: Depress the three external legs of the lock ring, then gently pry the three latches upward to release the back clamp from the back of the speedometer. 6. Unscrew the trip-meter reset button, and pull the harness from the clamp (remove the screw if necessary). 7. Lift the console and remove the old speedometer from the console. Discard the old speedometer, but retain the rubber gasket and back clamp for use with the new gauge. NOTE Set the console securely on the towel-covered fuel tank, and take care that it doesn’t fall off during the following opera- tions. 8. Set the console securelyon the fuel tank. Installation and Final Check NOTE Apply window cleaning fluid or mild soapy water to the speedometer gasket as needed to aid installation. 1. Turn the console over, facing upward. 2. Place the speedometer gasket into position around the console speedometer bore. 3. Fit the new gauge into the bore so that it fits snugly against the rubber gasket. Rotate the gauge into approximate visual alignment. The back clamp will complete the alignment. 4. Turn the console over, face down. 5. Install the back clamp

1. Place the motorcycle on a level and secure area. Disconnect the battery. 2. Refer to the appropriate factory service manual and remove the OEM speedometer and indicator lights. The indicator lights usually unplug either in the rear of the headlight or under the gas tank area. 3. Mount the new speedometer in the desired location. 4. Locate the OEM wire for the high beam indicator light. Connect it with the blue wire from the wire harness on the speedometer. Connect the blue/black wire from the speedometer to ground. 5. Locate the OEM wire for the gauge illumination (back) lighting. Connect this wire to the orange wire on the speedometer. Connect the black wire on the speedometer to ground. 6. Locate the OEM wires for the turn signals. Usually they are brown and violet wires. NOTE: You will notice only one bulb for the turn signals in the gauge and two wires from the bike to the harness. If you connect both of these wires directly to the yellow wire on the speedometer, this will allow feedback and cause all the signals to flash at once. To prevent this, you will need to add a diode between each OEM turn signal wire and the yellow wire coming from the speedometer. We recommend that you utilize a Dyna tach adapter, Part #D-101, available separately. This tach adapter includes the diodes necessary to allow the turn signal indicator light to operate correctly. Follow the instructions for the tach adapter, substituting the wires from the original wire harness found in step 6 for the two ignition terminals shown in the wire schematic. Hook the white wire on the tach adapter to the yellow wire for the turn signal indicator on the speedometer. If you use the D-101 adapter, skip steps 7-9 and go directly to step 10. 7. Take one of the diodes, making sure to observe the correct polarity, and attach it to the brown turn signal wire on the bike. 8. Take the remaining diode, again making sure to observe the correct polarity, and attach it to the violet turn signal wire on the bike

Speed Sensor Requirement Identification Certain motorcycles are not equipped with a port that will accept a Transmission Speed Sensor. Those models will require a Rear Wheel Speed Sensor. To determine which sensor is required, follow the following procedure: Determine if you have a mechanical speedometer 1. The mechanical speedometer is around 2 ¼” in diameter. 2. On the axle on the left side of the front wheel, there will be a 2″ diameter ‘donut like’ part that the axle passes through. This is the speedometer drive. Attached to the speedometer drive and extending back and up under the fuel tank will be a housed cable. This is the speedometer drive and cable to drive the mechanical speedometer. 3. If these conditions are true, you have a mechanical speedometer. Determine which speedometer drive sensor you need. You must determine if your transmission will accept the transmission sensor. If not, you will need the rear axle sensor. 1. On the top, right, rear of the transmission, will be a 1″ by 1/2″ (approximately) cover held in by one bolt. 2. If you find this then REMOVE the bolt and over. 3. If after removal of the cover you find a larger hole underneath, then you can use the transmission sensor. Figure 1—Transmission Sensor Port (Inset Shows Cover Removed) 4. If you have no cover, or under the cover is not a hole, then you need the rear axle sensor. Be sure to look closely and under the gasket under the cover. 5. If you have no sensor hole, then you need to make sure you have the rear wheel sensor. Speed Sensor Installation: The microSpeed™ speedometer can be used with either +12V or +5V hall effect electronic sensors located in transmission. Sensor is not include. If your sensor operates on +5V DC wire speedometer to sensor and power as shown in Figure 2 below. Please note that color of wires from the sensor may vary, check sensor documentation for proper signal connections. For +12V sensor you will not need the Blue wire of the microSpeed™ speedometer. It may be cut short, but make sure that the end is properly protected so that it will not accidentally short to metal on the motorcycle. Use Figure 3 below for wiring a +12V sensor. H-D motorcycles 1999 and earlier used +12V sensors. H-D motorcycles 2000 and later use +5V sensors. Note: H-D OEM sensors require 20Kohm resistor(provided) between Sensor power and Sensor signal as shown. Procedure: 1. Locate wires and determine connection points. Cut wires and techflex to proper lengths. 2. Connect speedometer wires to proper signal wires as shown in diagrams, including 20K ohm resistor if using stock H-D sensor. Use either butt connectors provided or customer supplied connectors. 3. Use electrical tape or Heat Shrink tubing around sensor signal wire, sensor power, and resistor to protect resistor. 4. Proceed to Setup Section below. Setup microSpeed™ Speedometer: 1. Before proceeding review User Guide document for detailed instructions on following procedure. 2. Turn on power to speedometer, display should read “odo” 3. Set initial odometer value 4. Turn off power for 2 seconds; then turn power on again 5. Display should read “F 0″ 6. DO NOT REMOVE THE 3 PHILLIP SCREWS ON THE BACK OF THE SPEEDOMETER. This will unscrew the circuit board and the main components inside the speedometer, and possibly damage it. Just leave those 3 screws alone. They won’t make your customization any easier if they are removed. This is the hard part. Turn the speedometer face down on a soft towel on a sturdy table, bench, etc. I used a regular flat screwdriver to do this step. There is a chrome metal ring holding the glass on the speedometer. It is factory sealed. On the bottom side of this ring start prying with a flat screwdriver under the bottom lip of the metal ring. This will be a slow process (patience, patience, patience) so don’t get in a hurry and ruin the wife’s kitchen table like I did. Go around the metal ring with a flat screwdriver prying it up as straight as you can. It’s easier doing this every millimeter or two. I had to do this about 3 times all the way around the ring. After you pry the lip of the ring up all the way around enough to loosen it up considerably, gently pull the ring off of the speedometer. The glass should come off with it. Put the glass with the chrome ring aside for later. You might want to use a soft lint free towel to rest it on

1. Using a 6mm Allen wrench, loosen the 2 front axle pinch bolts on the right side of the lower fork leg. Loosen bolts 4 or 5 turns. 2. Using a 17mm Allen wrench, slightly loosen the front axle from the right side of the bike. Having the front wheel on the ground will help you in loosening the axle. Do not remove the axle at this time! 3. Loosen and remove the speedometer cable from the back of the speedometer on your handlebars. Pull the speedometer cable all the way out of the front fork. Remove the cable from the speedometer drive on your front wheel (note the position of the connection as it will be similar on your new drive installation). This speedometer cable or speedometer drive will not be needed on your new wheel installation. 4. Block the back wheel to prevent the bike from rolling backwards, and raise the motorcycle’s front wheel off of the ground, so the wheel spins freely. You can do this with a motorcycle lift placed under the front portion of the motorcycle frame. Contact Scootworks to purchase a lift if you don’t have access to one. Ensure the bike is stable and will not fall before proceeding further! Scootworks, Inc. 3 5. Using the 17mm Allen wrench, finish loosening the front axle until it is completely free from the left side of the lower fork. Hold onto the front wheel and slowly remove the axle from the front fork. Be careful not to let the wheel drop. Having a helper hold the wheel for you as you remove the axle will ease the removal. Slide the brake rotor out of the calipers. NOTE: be careful not to operate the front brake controls with the brake rotor removed from the calipers. 6. With the wheel removed from the front forks, lay the wheel on a padded or cushioned surface with the brake rotor facing upwards. Using a 6mm Allen wrench, remove the 5 Allen bolts from the brake rotor. (The bolts are sometimes installed with loctite, and may require heating with a small torch to loosen the loctite). Remove the brake rotor from the wheel. Place the wheel to the side. Clean up the bolts as you will reuse them later. 7. Take your new custom wheel that you will be installing on your bike and place it on a cushioned or padded surface to prevent scratching. Turn it so that the side where the brake rotor attaches is facing upward. 8. Ensure the brake rotor mounting holes on the wheel are clean and free of oil or grease. Clean with alcohol if needed, then let dry. Place your new brake rotor adapter plate onto the wheel with the flat side against the wheel. Apply a small amount of medium strength (blue) loctite on each of the 5/16″ Allen bolts supplied with your kit and install through the new rotor adapter plate and into the wheel. Tighten with a 3/16″ Allen wrench until snug. When all bolts are installed, tighten in a star pattern, and torque to 25-30 ft. lbs. 9. Install your brake rotor onto the new brake rotor adapter using the original bolts you removed in step 6. Apply a small amount of medium strength loctite to each bolt and install through the brake rotor into the new brake rotor adapter. Tighten in a star pattern, and torque to 25-30 ft. lbs. 10. It is now time to install your new wheel/rotor adapter onto your bike. It is easiest to accomplish this with a helper, as it takes some coordination to get the wheel, brake rotor and spacers into place. Apply a thin coat of grease to the axle. Lift the front wheel into place between the front forks, aligning the brake rotor into the caliper. The caliper floats from left to right and can be moved into the proper position. If the caliper is closed, pry the brake pads apart so that the rotor will slide into the caliper.
